The Ukraine war has reshaped how militaries think about autonomous systems.

In recent years, Ukraine has often proven more effective using off-the-shelf technology adapted for military use than purpose-built systems that took decades to develop. As a result, the country has transformed its defense industry into an ecosystem of hundreds of companies, many of them private startups developing and fielding autonomous systems designed to be expendable—an approach that has sparked a broader change in defense technologies.

Today, large numbers of affordable, software-defined weapons can compete with a small number of expensive ones, a concept known as affordable mass, and the Department of War (DOW) is taking notice. The U.S. military is now moving toward an affordable mass model, where autonomy isn’t a hardware feature locked into specific platforms, but rather a software capability that can be deployed across different types of fleets, from sea to air. This software approach, spread across multiple platforms, reduces vendor lock-in and increases agility, enabling the DOW to keep ahead of threats amid a shifting landscape.

Meet Drone Stack

Drone Stack is Applied Intuition’s defense autonomy solution designed to enable intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and strike capability across any aircraft. It is built on the same approach that has proven successful across the company’s commercial autonomy products: best-in-class autonomy software, an operating system designed for rapid integration, and development tools that compress the iteration cycle from months to days or even hours.

Most companies have approached the problem vertically. They build an aircraft, integrate autonomy specific to that airframe, and sell the complete system. The software is tightly coupled to the hardware, making it difficult to adapt to new platforms or configurations. When the customer wants the capability on a different aircraft, the integration process starts from scratch.

Applied intuition takes the opposite approach. From day one, Drone Stack was designed to be hardware-agnostic. Building on a software-defined approach proven in the commercial sector (driverless eighteen wheelers with Isuzu, autonomous mining vehicles with Komatsu, global Vehicle OS with Stellantis), Applied Intuition’s engineers designed an intelligent platform. As a result, Drone Stack supports rapid integration with software-in-the-loop simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, a dedicated flight test facility, and a full development environment that mirrors deployment in the field.

It includes a hardware-agnostic autonomy stack that can run on any platform with sufficient compute, from high-end tactical systems to commercial quadcopters. As a result, it can handle mission planning, autonomous navigation, multi-aircraft coordination, target detection and tracking through embedded Automated Target Recognition (ATR) models, and precision engagement under defined rules of engagement.

Global Data Embedded on the Drone

Another differentiator for Drone Stack is its embedded compute.

Applied Intuition has nearly a decade of data from all vehicle forms informing its model—a proprietary database it can embed onto drones that enables them to fly autonomously even in GPS-denied environments.

Dubbed Axle, this embedded compute platform brings autonomy to any aircraft for all ranges of environments and levels of connectivity. The capability exists in multiple form factors, from a ruggedized enclosure for larger platforms, to smaller form factors optimized for size, weight, power, and cost. Both are built to the same validation and security standards Applied Intuition uses across all its commercial products.
